HISTORY OF

GULHANE MILITARY MEDICAL ACADEMY

  DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

GMMA dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology was founded by Muderris Asaf Dervis Pasha in 1909 inside the Topkapi Palace ramparts in Istanbul. He also was the chief of the department until 1920, when he passed the honor to Prof. Dr. Refik Munir Keskingil.  Prof. Keskingil was the director between 1921 to 1931. During this time, Prof. Ali Esat Birol took the first uterine x ray in Turkey in 1925.     He later became the chief of the department in 1931. He used radium for the first time for  the treatment of endometrium cancer in 1938.

In 1941 the clinic was moved from Istanbul to Ankara Cebeci Hospital along with the other clinics.  In 1943 Prof. Dr. Ali Esat Birol applied  medical therapy for vascular occlusive disease for the first time. 

Prof. Dr. Halit Kamgözen has worked as the chief of the department between 1949 - 1960 and between 1966 - 1972.

Prof Dr. Celalettin Peker has worked as the chief of the department between 1960- 1966 and 1971 - 1974.

Our clinic was on service at the old building in Bahcelievler during the years 1953 - 1971, and moved to our modern building in Etlik campus in 1971.

Between 1974 to 1979, Prof. Dr. Nazmi Sümer has run the department, and there has been an extensive improvement in gynecological surgery in our department.

The chief of the department was Prof.Dr.Saim MERMUT between 1979 - 1988, who had extensive theoritical and practical surgical experience and knowledge.  He developed a new surgical technique named after himsel - the Mermut technique for urinary stress incontinence and his work has been accepted in international meetings.,

After him, Prof. Dr. İnal Ülgenalp has been the chief of the department, who established the sub branches of Obstetrics and Gynecology department.  Gynecological oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal fetal medicine and benign gynecology units were established. Prof. Dr. Recai Pabuççu has studied gynecological microsurgery in Canada, Prof. Dr. Saffet Dilek has studied oncological surgery in United Kingdom, Prof. Dr. İskender Başer has studied invasive perinatology, Prof. Dr. Esat Orhon has studied andrology and assisted reproductive techniques in United States.

in 1995 Prof. Dr. Recai Pabuccu has become the chief of the department. During his time, In vitro fertilization unit was set up, and gynecological endoscopical operations, techniques like IUI, ICSI, IVF, TESA, MESA, PESA, Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, modern menopause management, gynecological oncology and perinatology techniques has been excelled. 

 Also Prof. Dr. Ali Ergun has studied high risk pregnancy and ultrasound in high risk pregnancy in United Kingdom, Associate Prof. Dr. Vedat Atay has studied urogynecology in  the USA, Associate Prof. Dr. Tansu Kucuk has studied Assisted reproductive techniques and preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Associate Prof. Dr. Namık Kemal Duru has studied cryobiology in the USA, Associate Prof. Dr. Mufit Cemal Yenen has studied laparoscopic oncological surgery in France.

The clinic was physically revised and modernized in July 2001. (click for details)

 Since its establishment, the department of obstetrics and gynecology has been run by 9 clinical directors and has trained 32 academical staff.

Prof. Dr. İskender Başer, is the current Chief of the Department since 2004.
